Un mecha (abreviación del japonés "Meka" (メカ), por la palabra inglesa "mechanical") es un robot (humanoide, animal, medio de transporte, o armas móviles, etc) de proporciones variables, diseñado tanto para protección de una ciudad como para uso militar u otros usos. Los mechas son un subgénero tanto en la rama de la ciencia ficción, como en la animación japonesa (anime), como en el ámbito de las historietas de Japón (manga) de donde provienen.
Algunas series de mechas son: Code Geass, Yatterman, Mazinger Z, Mobile Suit Gundam, Bokurano, Macross, Robotech, Super Sentai y su versión americana Power Rangers (en la que en vez de mechas se les llama zords), Full Metal Panic!, Eureka 7, Martian Successor Nadesico, Burst Angel, Zoids, Neon Genesis Evangelion y Transformers (en esta ultima los mechas no requieren ser operados por un piloto humano).
Otras variedades de mechas presentan robots con formas de animales (incluyendo algunos extintos, como dinosaurios), robots con dos o más transformaciones (generalmente alternando entre una forma humanoide y la de una máquina o vehículo), los mechas "fusionables", donde una variedad de mechas relativamente pequeños se unen para ensamblar uno mayor, son casi exclusivos de las series y películas de las décadas de los 70 y 80; y suelen ser considerados como el precursor de la mayoría de animes de la época actual, ya que en muy pocas series de hoy día se ven esta clase de combinaciones.
El estereotipo del piloto de mecha es un personaje jóven, valiente y talentoso (en algunos casos dotado de gran belleza). En la mayoría de las series de anime donde se presentan mechas, estos son considerados tecnología armamentistica de última generación y suelen ser comandados por pequeñas élites de pilotos altamente entrenados, o por entidades de científicos especializados en la creación de esta clase de arma, e inclusive; en varias series se utilizan entidades reconocidas; con un obvio cambio de nombre, que existen en el mundo real. En ocasiones el protagonista de una serie de estas características sufre un encuentro accidental con su mecha o es pariente cercano del creador que fallece en los primeros episodios asesinado por los enemigos y que antes de morir, le revela el secreto de la construccion del robot el cual en su agonía le pide pilotarlo, en un principio no se puede adaptar al manejo del mecha, pero consigue dominarlo en corto tiempo, superando incluso al personal militar capacitado, en otras circunstancias éste es elegido por un gran poder, o por una persona, en algunos casos cercana; que influye en su vida personal de manera decisiva.
